A Celtic midfielder has reportedly emerged as a transfer target for Nottingham Forest as the winter window edges closer to its conclusion.
With deadline day approaching, Celtic’s board has faced criticism from supporters over a relatively quiet January and early February, during which striker Tomas Cvancara and right-back Julian Araujo arrived on loan.
While attention has largely focused on potential reinforcements, player departures could also be part of the equation for the reigning Premiership champions.
Arne Engels has experienced an up-and-down spell since completing a club-record £11 million move from Bundesliga side Augsburg in 2024.
The Belgian midfielder’s technical quality has been evident, but some observers feel he has yet to consistently deliver at Parkhead during a challenging campaign.
Despite that, Sky Germany reports that Engels has attracted interest from the Premier League, with Nottingham Forest monitoring his situation.
Journalist Florian Plettenberg revealed on X that Forest are actively exploring a move for the 22-year-old ahead of deadline day, adding that a winter exit remains possible under the right circumstances. Engels is contracted to Celtic until 2028.
Elsewhere, Kieran Tierney has expressed hope that Celtic can add further reinforcements before the window closes on Monday night.
The defender recently returned to his boyhood club on a free transfer after leaving Arsenal, where he moved in a £25 million deal, and has gradually rediscovered the form that earned him his move to England.
With Celtic preparing to face Falkirk in the league and sitting third in the table—just a few points clear of fourth-placed Motherwell—Tierney stressed the importance of the upcoming fixtures.
“The aim for every club in a transfer window is to strengthen the squad, and that’s especially true for us with so much still to play for,” Tierney said. “We’ve already brought a couple of boys in and they’ve been excellent so far. Hopefully we can add a few more and really push on.
“It’s been a testing season for everyone at the club with all the challenges we’ve faced. To come out on top would be incredible.”
Tierney also acknowledged the challenge Falkirk pose, praising their recent performances and admitting Celtic will need to be at their best.
“They’re a very good side and they showed that again in the cup against Hearts,” he added. “The away game was tough, but we took a lot from it in terms of defending together. Keeping a clean sheet is always satisfying.”
