Axel Disasi was West Ham United’s final piece of business in the January transfer window, completing a deadline-day loan switch from Chelsea that will keep him in east London until the end of the season.
The France international arrives after a deeply frustrating period at Stamford Bridge, where his chances at first-team football had all but disappeared.
Disasi had not played a competitive match for more than a year, having been sidelined after a failed move away last summer and subsequently falling out of favour under former head coach Enzo Maresca.
During that spell, he was effectively frozen out, spending a lengthy period training away from the senior squad before eventually being allowed back into under-21 and first-team sessions. Even then, a return to competitive action never materialised.
Chelsea originally signed Disasi from Monaco in 2023 for a fee in the region of £38 million, with the defender also spending the latter part of last season on loan at Aston Villa.
Now, Nuno Espírito Santo has opted to bring him to West Ham in an effort to reinforce a defence that has struggled significantly as the club battles to steer clear of relegation.
Speaking about his decision to join the Hammers, Disasi was candid in his assessment of the move.
“I think it was the right move for me because, as everyone knows from my situation, I needed to get some minutes,” he explained.
“The club gave me the chance to show my quality on the pitch.
I spoke with the people here and felt they genuinely wanted me. That’s why I’m here, and I’m really looking forward to starting.”
In his first interview as a West Ham player, Disasi also made it clear that the loan represents an opportunity to rebuild confidence and momentum, with an eye on working his way back into France’s plans ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
He did not shy away from the challenge awaiting him either, describing West Ham’s current predicament as an “exciting challenge” rather than pressure.
“The ambition is to put the club back in its normal position and to enjoy playing football,” he added.
While his honesty may have raised a few eyebrows — and yes, West Ham are very much a stepping stone in his recovery — few in east London will care if Disasi’s presence helps secure Premier League survival.
