Glasgow Rangers continued their prolific run in the 2025/26 SFA Cup, scoring 13 goals across two matches, with an emphatic 8-0 demolition of Championship side Queen’s Park at Ibrox on Sunday.
Danny Rohl’s team avoided the mistakes of previous games, delivering a ruthless and clinical performance in front of their home fans.
January signings Ryan Naderi and Tochi Chukwuani each netted braces, while captain James Tavernier also scored twice. Bojan Miovski added to his tally with his tenth goal of the season.
The victory provided a significant morale boost for Rangers ahead of two crucial Scottish Premiership fixtures against Motherwell and Hearts in the coming week.
Rohl’s surprising tactical move against Queen’s Park
With the game well under control, Rohl used the opportunity to experiment. One notable decision was deploying Oliver Antman at right-back for the second half after Dujon Sterling was replaced by Nedim Bajrami.
Antman, who has never started a senior match as a right-back, usually plays on either wing. However, he adapted impressively, particularly when left-footed Andreas Skov Olsen moved infield. Antman exploited the space on the flank, delivering the cross for Naderi’s second goal.
He also contributed defensively with several strong tackles, showing potential to play this role in future league games, giving Rangers another attacking option.
The Rangers flop who should not start again
During the January transfer window, Rangers strengthened their squad with left-back Tuur Rommens, who registered an assist on his debut against Kilmarnock.
Alongside Jayden Meghoma, this gives Rohl two natural left-back options, reducing the need for Max Aarons, who has previously filled in at left-back.
Aarons did not feature against Queen’s Park and may no longer be required to start at right-back either, with Antman’s impressive performance providing another viable option alongside Tavernier and Sterling.
Given this, Aarons should not start another game this season, as the team now has ample depth in both full-back positions.
The former Norwich defender has struggled to contribute in attack this season. While tidy on the ball and making few defensive errors, Aarons has yet to register an assist in any competition and has only created one ‘big chance’ in the Premiership from eight starts.
By contrast, Antman managed one assist in just a single half at right-back—a more productive output than Aarons’ 31 appearances this season.
Rangers require creativity and goals to secure the Premiership title, and Antman, who has contributed two assists in his last two games and 17 assists in 2024/25 for Go Ahead Eagles, offers greater attacking potential despite not being a natural defender.
With Tavernier, Sterling, and Antman now providing quality options on both flanks, Aarons’ involvement should be limited for the remainder of his loan spell.
Rohl has all the tools to break down low blocks without relying on the underperforming English full-back.
