Jens Berthel Askou accused Rangers of adopting a “cynical” game plan following their 1-1 draw with Motherwell on Wednesday night.
The points were shared after Stephen Welsh struck late on to rescue a draw for the ten-man Steelmen. Rangers had taken an early lead through Nico Raskin, while Motherwell were reduced to ten men when Lukas Fadinger was shown a red card.
Despite the setback, Askou felt his side fully deserved something from the match and heaped praise on what he described as a “sensational” display. However, the Motherwell boss claimed Rangers repeatedly disrupted his team’s momentum by conceding fouls to halt their attacking flow.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Askou said: “It was an absolutely sensational performance from start to finish.
“We dominated the game in so many ways. Even with one man down, we looked like the team who wanted to win the match.
“Our intensity and speed of play were outstanding, and it caused Rangers huge problems. They had to give away free-kick after free-kick just to stop us.
“I was surprised they didn’t receive more yellow cards in the first half, and I don’t think that’s good enough.
“This is a top-level game — probably the best fixture you can get in Scottish football right now — and to play it in such a cynical way is a shame.
“I think that’s why there weren’t more goals. Still, we didn’t let frustration take over. We stayed focused, made a few adjustments at half-time, and knew chances would come in the second half.”
Askou also addressed Fadinger’s dismissal, accepting the decision while highlighting his team’s discipline over the course of the season.
“Then Lukas gets sent off, and it’s our first red card,” he said. “Only Falkirk have avoided a red card so far, and we were the second last to receive one, despite playing with real intensity and aggression.
“If you ever have to get one, it’s like that. He’s trying everything to stop Moore and is unlucky to catch him just above the ankle. I hope he’s okay.
“The challenge wasn’t more intense than many others we faced in the game — he’s just unfortunate that the contact was a few inches off the ground.”
