Claudio Ranieri, director of AS Roma, has effectively confirmed that the club intends to make Donyell Malen’s loan move permanent.
Malen, on loan from Aston Villa until the end of the season, has enjoyed a sensational start in Serie A, scoring five goals in six appearances.

After opening his account with a goal against Torino on his debut, the Dutch forward followed up with braces against both Cagliari and Napoli, helping propel Roma into third place in the Serie A standings.

Reports suggest the loan deal includes a clause triggering a permanent transfer for €28m (£24m) if Roma qualify for European competition next season — a scenario that now seems all but guaranteed.

Speaking ahead of Roma’s 3-0 win over Cremonese on Sunday, Ranieri praised Malen’s adaptation to Italian football:
“He’s arrived at the right time, in the right place, with the right coach.

But it’s also true that there’s a big difference between the Premier League and our league.

In the Premier League, he played and didn’t play, he was in and out, and he didn’t find the kind of talent he’s finding here in the Italian league. We’re holding on to Malen because he’s doing very well, and we truly hope he continues on this path.”

Ranieri’s comments underline Roma’s clear intention to retain Malen beyond the current season as he continues to impress in Serie A.
