Newcastle United latest news: Everton have suffered a significant injury setback ahead of their trip to Newcastle United, with one of their important players ruled out for Saturday’s clash at St James’ Park (3pm kick-off).
The Toffees travel to Tyneside following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Manchester United on Monday evening.
A strike from Benjamin Sesko proved decisive for Michael Carrick’s side, boosting their hopes of securing European football next season.
Everton, who are also targeting a European qualification spot, were already without Jack Grealish in that match.
The Manchester City loanee has been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign after sustaining a stress fracture in his foot. Grealish featured 22 times across all competitions for Everton, contributing two goals and six assists.
However, his most recent goal came in early December, shortly after the Magpies produced a dominant display at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
This weekend offers Newcastle the opportunity to complete a league double over Everton. However, history suggests it won’t be straightforward. David Moyes’ side have enjoyed positive results at St James’ Park in recent seasons.
On their last visit to Tyneside — the final day of the previous campaign — Everton secured a 1-0 victory. Newcastle entered that fixture knowing a win would seal Champions League qualification, but instead had to rely on other results after falling short. A 65th-minute strike from Charly Alcaraz sealed the win for the visitors.
Alcaraz, though, will not be available to repeat those heroics. Moyes confirmed the midfielder picked up an injury late in training and is expected to be sidelined for several weeks. Backup goalkeeper Mark Travers, deputy to Jordan Pickford, is Everton’s only other notable injury concern.
Newcastle United injury update
Unlike Moyes, Eddie Howe has multiple selection headaches to contend with. Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes remains out until April with a muscle injury.
Fabian Schar is also facing a spell on the sidelines due to an ankle problem, while Emil Krafth has been ruled out for the season following knee surgery.
Tino Livramento is nearing a return but will not be fit in time to face Everton. Lewis Miley is also expected to miss out after suffering a leg muscle injury during Newcastle’s trip to Paris in January.
Howe was dealt another setback this week as Jacob Ramsey missed Tuesday’s match against Qarabag FK with a minor hamstring issue. There is optimism he could recover in time for Saturday’s fixture.
On a positive note, Sven Botman and Yoane Wissa both returned to action in midweek and may be available for selection this weekend if needed.
