Once seeming destined to tumble out of the top flight, West Ham have closed the gap significantly, but they must continue collecting points during a challenging series of fixtures to stay in the survival race.
While the team faces a tough road ahead, football finance expert Kieran Maguire suggests a potential points deduction for a rival could offer some relief.
Manchester City are under investigation for more than 100 alleged financial breaches, with both verdict and punishment still pending. Speaking on The Overlap, Maguire explained:
“The Premier League cannot relegate Manchester City to League One or League Two—that is an EFL decision, and no charges have been proven there. Therefore, any punishment would have to be a points deduction. Historically, Everton and Nottingham Forest received six and four-point deductions respectively for offences covering three years. The allegations against Manchester City span nine years, so the scale is far larger. On merit, a points deduction between 40 and 60 points would align with past precedents.”
Maguire added:
“The severity is unclear. Forest and Everton’s cases involved FFP alone, whereas City’s allegations are broader, which explains the delay. There are also questions of honesty at board level—if proven guilty, City’s leadership may need to resign, potentially triggering a major club restructure, similar to Juventus in Serie A.”
“Potentially yes, though City could appeal, which would delay any decision.”
While such a scenario could offer West Ham a lifeline, Santo and his squad remain focused on earning survival on the pitch rather than relying on external developments.
