Eddie Howe hails “outstanding” Jordan Pickford after 3-2 Everton win

Everton continued their impressive form on the road as goals from Jarrad Branthwaite, Beto, and Thierno Barry lifted the Toffees to 40 points.

“I’ve got to say that’s one of the best saves I’ve seen live. It was outstanding. Considering the timing of the game and what was at stake, it was obviously frustrating for us.”

After the save, Pickford celebrated by turning to the Newcastle fans behind his goal and flexing his biceps, while James Garner and thousands of fans across Tyneside watched in disbelief. Despite previous accusations that Pickford, a Sunderland supporter, could be distracted by Newcastle crowds, he showed complete focus to deny Tonali’s powerful strike.

Branthwaite echoed Howe’s admiration, calling the save “magic” and admitting he had no idea how Pickford managed to get a glove on the ball. He said:
“I think it’s the best save I’ve ever seen. I don’t know how he’s pulled it off. When he does things like that, it’s magic. He’s kept us in the game.”

Pickford’s record and future at Everton
Some raised eyebrows when Everton paid £30m to sign Pickford from Sunderland in June 2017 at just 23, but the move has proven exceptional. The Washington-born goalkeeper has made 348 appearances for the Toffees, keeping 98 clean sheets along the way.

At only 31, Pickford could still guard Everton’s goal for another decade. The Sunderland academy graduate is even mentoring his potential successor, namesake George Pickford, ensuring the club has a reliable future in goal.

In terms of value, Pickford has more than justified his £30m transfer fee, becoming one of Everton’s most dependable and iconic players.
