Chris Sutton has always worn his love for Celtic F.C. on his sleeve, and the former striker understands better than most what it means to represent the club with pride.
Sutton spent six years at Parkhead from 2000 to 2006 and was on co-commentary duty for Sunday’s Old Firm derby against Rangers F.C. at Ibrox.
The opening 45 minutes were firmly controlled by the hosts, with Youssef Chermiti stealing the spotlight thanks to two superb finishes. His first arrived in the eighth minute after Rangers won possession high up the pitch and swiftly shifted the ball from left to right.
A delivery from Andreas Skov Olsen was met by an audacious overhead kick from the Portuguese forward, which flew spectacularly into the net.
Chermiti struck again 18 minutes later in a different but equally impressive fashion. When a cross into the box wasn’t properly cleared, he reacted quickest — edging past Julian Araujo before calmly slipping the ball beyond Viljami Sinisalo in the Celtic goal.
It was a dominant display from Rangers, who overwhelmed their rivals and left them struggling to gain any foothold in the contest.
Sutton singled out Dane Murray for criticism over the second goal.
The defender’s inclusion in the starting line-up had already raised eyebrows among supporters, and his failure to deal with the danger only intensified frustration in the stands.
On commentary for Sky Sports, Sutton did not hold back.
He acknowledged Chermiti’s determination and quality but insisted Murray should have handled the situation, branding the defensive lapse “horrendous.”
Co-commentator Scott Arfield echoed the sentiment, describing the moment as calamitous from the Celtic defender.
As the first half unfolded, Sutton’s disappointment grew. It wasn’t just one mistake that troubled him — he felt his former side were being comprehensively outplayed, summing it up as nothing short of a mauling.
