Kris Boyd disappointed with Rangers boss Danny Rohl after what he heard him say

During the press conference, the Rangers F.C. manager was asked about remarks made by Luke McGowan of Celtic F.C.. While responding, Rohl also made comments regarding goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

Those remarks prompted a reaction from Celtic boss Martin O’Neill, who described it as “extraordinary” that Rohl was speaking about his side despite having spent less than a year in Glasgow.

Boyd unhappy with Rohl getting drawn into the debate

After watching the press conference footage, Boyd admitted he was left shaking his head before the derby kicked off.

The former Rangers striker explained that he understands how the media operates in the build-up to major fixtures like the Old Firm clash. According to him, the journalist was simply doing their job by asking questions designed to put the manager under pressure.

However, Boyd believes Rohl failed to deal with the situation properly and should have dismissed the question with a brief response instead of engaging with it.

Rohl’s remarks ultimately triggered a strong reply from O’Neill, who Boyd believes has far more experience in dealing with such situations.

Speaking to The Scottish Sun, Boyd said:
“The way he approached that last Old Firm match had me shaking my head.
I’ve been around the game long enough to understand how the media works before big derbies.

Journalists will always ask questions that put people on the spot. But I felt Rohl allowed himself to be drawn into an argument with the Celtic manager that he should have avoided.”

Boyd added that O’Neill has earned the authority to speak confidently due to his long-standing achievements at Celtic, something he believes Rohl has not yet established.

He continued:

“O’Neill has built that credibility through everything he has done at Parkhead. Rohl hasn’t reached that point yet.
His main focus should be on delivering his message to the players rather than taking digs at rivals. The drop-off in that last derby was incredible.”

Rangers board still backing Rohl
Despite the criticism, the Rangers manager still appears to have the support of the club’s hierarchy.

Andrew Cavenagh has reportedly been impressed with the way Rohl managed to stabilise the team after replacing Russell Martin earlier in the season.

It would likely require a dramatic downturn in results between now and the end of the campaign for the Rangers board to consider making a change, even if the team finishes the season without silverware.

The club are expected to support Rohl during the upcoming summer transfer window. The next few weeks, however, will be crucial for the German manager as he attempts to fully win over the Rangers supporters.

If he can guide the team to a domestic double, it would significantly strengthen his influence at the club and help push through transfer targets—especially considering the difficult position the team was in when he arrived back in October.
