Defender Omar Sowunmi has been a key figure for Bromley F.C. for several seasons, but the experienced centre-back could be on the move this summer amid growing interest from clubs higher up the football pyramid.
According to reports from journalist Pete O’Rourke, shared via X, Bolton Wanderers F.C. and Plymouth Argyle F.C. are among the teams tracking the towering defender.
Both clubs are currently battling for promotion to the EFL Championship and could even meet in the play-offs depending on how the season unfolds. Bolton currently sit third in the table, eight points behind the automatic promotion places, while Plymouth are pushing hard to break into the top six.
Although their immediate focus remains on the pitch, both clubs are already preparing for the upcoming transfer window, with potential reinforcements being identified behind the scenes.
O’Rourke reports that Bolton and Plymouth are two of several teams hoping to secure the services of the 6’6” defender. Oxford United F.C., currently competing in the Championship, are also showing interest, along with Barnsley F.C.. In Scotland, Aberdeen F.C. are also said to be monitoring the 30-year-old’s situation.
Sowunmi’s Career Journey
Sowunmi began his senior career in the academy setup at Ipswich Town F.C. between 2014 and 2015, though he never made a first-team appearance.
He moved to Yeovil Town F.C. in 2015, where he spent four seasons, making 69 league appearances and scoring three goals. During the 2018–19 campaign, he also served as club captain, demonstrating his leadership qualities in EFL League Two.
In 2019, he returned to his hometown club Colchester United F.C. for an undisclosed fee and made 22 appearances over two seasons.
The defender joined Bromley in 2021 and enjoyed a strong spell with the club, making 67 appearances and scoring 10 goals, highlighting his aerial threat despite playing in defence.
He later spent the 2023–24 season at Sutton United F.C., where he made 35 appearances and scored four times, before returning to Bromley in July 2024 ahead of their League Two campaign. As of the 2025–26 season, he remains an important member of the squad.
What Lies Ahead for Bolton and Plymouth
As Bolton Wanderers and Plymouth Argyle continue their push for promotion, both clubs face a demanding run of fixtures.
Bolton will travel to Rotherham United F.C. before hosting Doncaster Rovers F.C.. They will then visit Port Vale F.C. and later take on Stevenage F.C., although international call-ups could impact that fixture.
April will begin with a crucial trip to Home Park to face Plymouth in what could be a pivotal match in the promotion race.
Meanwhile, Plymouth will first travel to face Reading F.C. before returning to Home Park for consecutive matches against Stevenage and Huddersfield Town A.F.C.. A trip to Bradford City A.F.C. follows before the key showdown with Bolton at the start of April.
With the play-off race entering a decisive phase, both sides know that a strong run of results could be crucial in determining their promotion hopes.
