Danny Rohl is beginning to come under pressure at Rangers following a pair of disappointing results in consecutive Old Firm derbies.
Supporters in G51 have started to question the German boss after Rangers dropped two points against Celtic F.C. in the William Hill Premiership before crashing out of the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup quarter-finals on penalties at Ibrox.
With their cup hopes over, the Light Blues must now focus solely on the league, where they trail Heart of Midlothian F.C. by six points with nine matches remaining.
Rohl will now shift attention to the upcoming trip to St Mirren F.C. in Paisley on 15 March, but the Rangers manager is likely to face increasing scrutiny as the season enters its decisive stage.
Sutton questions Rangers’ mentality and attacking quality
Former Celtic F.C. striker Chris Sutton believes Heart of Midlothian F.C. remain the strongest contenders for the William Hill Premiership title.
Sutton suggested that Celtic arguably shouldn’t still be in the title conversation, but credited Martin O’Neill for keeping their hopes alive at Parkhead.
When it comes to Rangers, however, Sutton expressed doubts, pointing to concerns over the team’s mentality and lack of attacking creativity.
These worries are shared by some supporters in G51, who are questioning whether the Light Blues have the quality and consistency required to push over the line under Rohl. In particular, Rangers’ struggles in the final third this season have been noticeable, an issue the former Sheffield Wednesday F.C. manager will need to address quickly.
Writing in the Daily Record on 14 March, Sutton said Hearts are still the side most likely to lift the title this year. He added that there are doubts surrounding Rangers’ mentality and creativity, while Celtic remain in the race largely because of O’Neill’s ability to maximise the potential of his squad.
Uncertain outlook for Rohl at Ibrox
At a club like Rangers F.C., results ultimately determine a manager’s job security.
Rohl has earned significant credit for reviving Rangers’ title challenge after a disastrous start to the campaign under Russell Martin. However, that goodwill alone may not be
enough to shield him from criticism.
The two Old Firm setbacks have dampened the mood around Ibrox, and signs of supporter frustration were already visible during the pitch invasion following the clash with Celtic.
Despite the growing pressure, Rohl has likely done enough to remain in charge heading into next season. However, a strong start to the next campaign could prove crucial if he is to silence doubts about his future in the Rangers dugout.
