Carragher’s fellow pundit Gary Neville also questioned the striker’s lack of cutting edge, describing his performance as unusually flat. Meanwhile, frustrated Villa supporters took to social media to vent their disappointment, with some even starting the hashtag #WatkinsOut shortly after the final whistle.
Despite the criticism, Emery chose a more measured tone in his post-match comments. The Villa manager suggested Watkins may have been fatigued after a demanding week and expressed confidence that the striker would quickly return to form.
The defeat leaves Aston Villa sitting sixth in the Premier League standings, four points behind the Champions League places with nine matches remaining. Carragher warned that if key players fail to deliver in crucial fixtures, Villa’s hopes of securing European qualification could be at risk.
