As the battle for survival intensifies, attention has turned to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with hopes that he can continue adding to his double-digit goal tally.
Although he missed a crucial penalty against Crystal Palace, the 29-year-old remains a key figure in both Leeds’ attack and the dressing room.
Calvert-Lewin eyeing England return
Since joining Leeds, Calvert-Lewin has reignited his chances of an England call-up thanks to his impressive goal-scoring form. His unique playing style could also make him an appealing option for Thomas Tuchel this month.
Despite this, his main priority remains performing for Leeds. Any talk of an England return is simply a positive byproduct of his hard work and form.
“There was a time I thought I might never play for England again,” he told The Athletic. “A year ago, nobody would have expected me to be here, but I always believed it was possible with the right timing and effort.
“Just being in the conversation again means a lot to me.”
England’s squad for the March international break is set to be announced on Friday, March 20 at 10am, with matches against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley.
Survival is the main goal
While international recognition would be a major personal achievement, Leeds’ Premier League survival remains the top priority.
Calvert-Lewin’s performances since December have significantly boosted the club’s chances of staying up. Although his goals have slowed recently, reaching 10 goals at this stage highlights his impact. Credit must also go to Daniel Farke for building the team around his strengths.
For the striker, however, individual numbers mean little without team success.
“You’re only safe when it’s mathematically confirmed,” he said. “We can’t depend on other teams dropping points—we have to focus on ourselves.
“I could score 25 goals, but if we’re relegated, then I haven’t done my job.”
Can he deliver when it matters most?
Leeds fans are beginning to appreciate Calvert-Lewin’s importance beyond just scoring goals. Since his arrival, he has been a crucial presence, and one missed penalty does not change that.
If he can find the net a few more times before the end of the season, he could be the difference in keeping Leeds in the Premier League.
Looking ahead, he may also have a strong case for future England selection. Apart from Harry Kane, few English strikers have matched his level this season. Players like Danny Welbeck, Ollie Watkins, and Tammy Abraham have struggled for consistency, leaving Calvert-Lewin firmly in contention.
