Former Russell Martin has backed Ipswich Town FC to clinch automatic promotion from the Championship this season.
The 40-year-old, who spent 15 years at Norwich City FC and made over 300 appearances, is currently without a managerial role following spells with Southampton FC and Rangers FC.
Despite being out of work, Martin has kept a close eye on the Championship campaign. While he has been particularly impressed by Middlesbrough FC, he believes Ipswich’s prior success — along with the experience within the squad — could prove decisive in the promotion race. He even tipped them to go up alongside Coventry City FC.
Speaking about his prediction, Martin pointed to the influence of manager Kieran McKenna and a group of players who already know what it takes to win promotion.
He explained that teams with previous promotion experience often carry a psychological advantage, especially during the pressure of the run-in.
Reflecting on his own time at Norwich, Martin said that having players who had “been there and done it” created a strong belief within the squad that they would get the job done.
According to him, that kind of winning mentality can make the difference when the stakes are highest — giving Ipswich a crucial edge over their rivals as the season approaches its climax.
