Crystal Palace now soar into race to sign £200k-a-week Serie A star who Newcastle want to replace Tonali

Crystal Palace FC have joined the race to sign a “relentless” midfielder, though they are expected to face strong competition from Newcastle United for his signature.

Palace targeting midfield reinforcements amid Wharton interest

Ahead of their UEFA Europa Conference League round-of-16 clash with AEK Larnaca, manager Oliver Glasner praised Adam Wharton for his impressive development this season.

Glasner highlighted the midfielder’s creativity, noting his assist tally and growing influence in advanced areas, while also pointing out that the next step in his evolution is adding goals to his game.

However, Wharton’s rise has not gone unnoticed. Interest from clubs such as Manchester United and Liverpool FC could make it difficult for Palace to keep him beyond the summer transfer window.

Securing European qualification may help persuade the young midfielder to stay, but Palace still have work to do after being held to a 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park in the first leg.

Barella emerges as ambitious target
With uncertainty surrounding Wharton’s future, the club has begun exploring midfield options and has identified Nicolò Barella as a potential signing.

According to reports, Palace have entered the race for the Inter Milan star, though Newcastle are also interested, viewing him as a possible replacement for Sandro Tonali.

Barella, widely considered to be at the peak of his career, remains a key figure for Inter. It is believed that a fee of around £40 million may be required to tempt the Italian side into selling.

The 68-cap Italy international has continued to deliver strong performances in Serie A this season, contributing a goal and seven assists in 26 appearances. He also brings significant experience at the highest level, with 57 appearances in the UEFA Champions League.

Barella’s creativity has been particularly notable, having created 58 chances in the league — the second-highest in Inter’s squad. He was even praised for a “relentless” display against FC Barcelona in last season’s Champions League semi-final.

While he would represent a major statement signing for Palace, convincing him to leave Inter — a club that has recently reached multiple Champions League finals — could prove to be a significant challenge.
