Despite a lively and competitive first half, Newcastle’s European hopes were ultimately crushed as Barcelona ran riot after the break. It was a harsh outcome, but Eddie Howe’s side contributed to their own downfall with poor defending and a second-half collapse.
Even so, Raphinha—who delivered a sensational performance with two goals and two assists—spoke highly of the Magpies. The Brazilian international described Newcastle as “spectacularly strong,” highlighting their physicality and intensity, qualities he became familiar with during his time in the Premier League.
Reflecting on the match, Raphinha admitted it was a difficult contest against a powerful opponent, especially given Newcastle’s strength at St James’ Park. He also noted that securing a draw in the first leg had been a positive result for Barcelona heading into the return fixture.
Newcastle showed glimpses of that strength early on, but unlike elite sides, they were unable to sustain their level across the full 90 minutes. In truth, the tie may have slipped away in the first leg, where they failed to capitalise on their superiority and lacked the clinical edge needed at this level.
Defensively, Newcastle struggled throughout. All three first-half goals conceded were avoidable, though they remained competitive and posed attacking threats of their own. However, the key turning point, according to Howe, came just before half-time.
A penalty conceded by Kieran Trippier—after bringing down Raphinha—proved decisive. Howe later admitted his side failed to recover mentally from that moment, describing the second half as “painful” and psychologically damaging.
Raphinha, meanwhile, was delighted with Barcelona’s dominant 7-2 victory. He reiterated his respect for Newcastle, acknowledging their physical style and recalling his previous experience facing them in England. His individual display stood out, scoring early after capitalising on a defensive mistake and adding another later by intercepting a loose pass.
He also praised young teammate Lamine Yamal for his involvement, particularly in the buildup to key moments, while emphasizing the strong chemistry within the squad.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick was equally impressed, rating Raphinha’s performance highly and commending his ability to deliver on the big stage.
