Charly Alcaraz is set for a frustrating realization as Everton find themselves committed to keeping Merlin Röhl.

The Argentine midfielder, who made his permanent switch to the Toffees in the summer of 2025, has struggled to secure a regular place under David Moyes, featuring only sporadically throughout the campaign.

That’s not to say the former Southampton player hasn’t contributed when called upon at Hill Dickinson Stadium, but injuries have recently kept him sidelined. Even so, Everton haven’t felt his absence, with James Garner and Idrissa Gueye continuing to control the midfield with authority.

Röhl’s arrival from Freiburg initially sparked excitement, especially given his reputation as a Germany U21 international. However, that optimism has quickly faded, with underwhelming performances limiting his impact and game time in the Premier League.

There had been quiet hopes within the fanbase that Everton might find a way to cancel the permanent clause included in his loan deal. But according to reports, there is no such escape route—meaning the club is now locked into completing the transfer.

That development is unlikely to please either the club or Alcaraz, particularly given Röhl’s lack of standout displays this season.

As a result, Everton are now preparing to pay £18 million for the German midfielder once the summer window opens—a commitment that could force tough decisions elsewhere in the squad.

Alcaraz, who has managed just 673 Premier League minutes this season, may be the one to make way. Despite his limited role, his previous spells at Juventus and Flamengo mean he could still attract interest from clubs across Europe and South America.

While Everton may be reluctant to part ways with him, Röhl’s unavoidable signing could leave them with little choice.
