Speaking to ESPN, Alderweireld did not hold back in his assessment of Tottenham’s struggles. With the team languishing in 18th place on 30 points—two behind West Ham in 17th—he questioned whether the squad truly has the quality required.
He argued that top players should step up in decisive moments and consistently perform at a high level, something he believes has been missing all season. According to him, several players signed for significant fees have failed to deliver—not just in patches, but across the entire campaign—raising serious doubts about their overall standard.
Players must take the blame
Tottenham have already gone through multiple managerial changes in an attempt to halt their decline, with Roberto De Zerbi becoming the third head coach this season after Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor. However, Alderweireld insists the issue runs deeper than the dugout.
He believes the responsibility lies with the squad, pointing to a lack of accountability and consistency. In his view, changing managers will not fix the problem if the players continue to underperform.
