Tottenham Hotspur are bracing for the possible departure of several key players as the summer transfer window approaches.
Relegation remains a serious concern for the Lilywhites following a 1-0 defeat away to Sunderland in Roberto De Zerbi’s first game in charge. With West Ham United and Leeds United both securing victories, Spurs have slipped into the bottom three. Unsurprisingly, this has sparked speculation about the futures of several players who may be unwilling to compete in the Championship if the club goes down.
A significant squad overhaul could be on the horizon, with players such as Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, and Guglielmo Vicario all linked with potential exits. However, one key figure appears ready to stay and help the club fight for an immediate return to the top flight.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Sports, Dejan Kulusevski could remain at Tottenham even if relegation becomes a reality. Despite expectations of a player exodus, the journalist suggests the Swedish international is committed to the project, with De Zerbi keen to build around him.
Di Marzio stated that Kulusevski’s mentality and leadership qualities make him an ideal figure for the club moving forward, regardless of whether they are in the Premier League or the Championship. He also emphasized that De Zerbi highly values players with strong character and identity, and will make every effort to keep him at the club.
Since joining Tottenham from Juventus in January 2022, Kulusevski has been one of their most consistent performers. His absence has been deeply felt during Spurs’ difficult campaign.
The 25-year-old has yet to feature this season after suffering a serious knee injury in May 2025, which ruled him out of the UEFA Europa League Final against Manchester United in Bilbao. He subsequently underwent major patella cartilage surgery, followed by a lengthy and challenging rehabilitation process that included multiple setbacks.
Graham Potter, head coach of Sweden national team, provided an update in March, noting that Kulusevski was making progress. However, a return before the end of the season remains uncertain. The midfielder recently shared his own update, which suggested he is still in a race against time to feature again this term.
Tottenham are expected to take a cautious approach with his recovery, given the seriousness of the injury. While his current fitness concerns may deter potential suitors this summer, Di Marzio’s update is likely to strengthen fans’ admiration for Kulusevski’s commitment to the club.
